Compelling Advertisement – Why?

Samsung Infuse 4G “Spider”

http://youtu.be/mcr2uWkJkzI

Three business-type folks at a fancy restaurant enjoying what seems to be a stereotypical business lunch and, bam, the unexpected. The younger man puts down his phone, camera close-up to the phone, it starts vibrating/ringing and displays a scary spider – the woman starts screaming and the older gentleman, to the rescue, starts smashing the spider with his shoe. Or, at least they believed it to be a spider. Samsung reinforces this point with the copy, “Colors so real, it’s almost unreal.”

This ad is compelling because it is attention-grabbing, unexpected, and funny. I think the concept, and acting, support the overall message that Samsung is trying to drive home. However, I think it’s most compelling attribute is that I believe it. There was enough reality for me in this commercial that I was convinced that this could have been/might be an actual situation.

Full disclosure: I have an iPhone.
