where myspace is still relevant

The last decade social media has given everyone a new platform to promote their product. I think one of the more interesting and interactive communities is musicians. Before the Internet age the only pace you learned about new music was radio, tv, and friends. Today you have a multitude of sites such as bandcamp, purevolme, soundcloud, myspace, iTunes, spotify, vimeo, dedicated to artists presenting their music. All of which can easily integrated it into other social networks.

Local hip-hop performers Dyme Def have been gaining attention utilizing these resources. Each member, as well as the group as a whole, has a twitter handle which they link videos, reviews, and build conversations with fans. They recently expanded their brand to include their clothing and skateboard company that they promote often.

While not reserved only to Dyme Def one of the more exciting uses of social media within musicians is “secret shows.” Last year the group had a number of these around the Pacific NW, with most selling out. I had the opportunity to work with them for one during Capital Hill Block Party. Announced via twitter 45 minutes prior to their secret performance the venue immediately reached capacity with a multitude of fans standing outside to witness the show. These Renton natives utilize social networks to build their fan base, brands, and have emerged as one of the premier hip-hop performances from the Pacific Nortwest.
